Detroit Free Press- Kyle Kandilian no longer sleeps in his bedroom in Dearborn. It’s crawling with roaches. Tens of thousands of roaches. Maybe 200,000, he says. And that’s just how he likes it. Kandilian, 20, collects and breeds the insects. In the roach room — which is tidy, by the way, and stacked with boxes and crates of roach colonies — there are about 130 varieties. He raises them for fun, sells some for pets and others as food for reptiles. It helps pay for tuition at the University of Michigan-Dearborn, where he’s studying environmental science. He’s considering a career in forestry, pest management or nature-insect education
It’s really easy to make fun of Bug Kid for breeding literally hundreds of thousands of cockroaches at his mom’s house, but I’m not going to do that. You know why? Because Bug Kid has it made. He’s easily the number one cockroach dealer in the state of Michigan, if not the entire Midwest. His seller rating on Arachnoboards.com is higher than most people could ever dream of coming close to. And as weird as his job may be, he’s an environmental science major setting his own schedule and doing a something that doesn’t make him want to kill himself. Despite popular belief the salary for a college blogger consists exclusively of alcohol and Twitter followers, and compared to some of the shit I did to “pay for books” this is heaven. Is there a stigma attached to being “Bug Kid?” Sure there is, but it can’t be any worse than “the kid who makes really good wraps at Late Night” or “the ugly bartender.” Keep doing you Bug Kid.
