Daily Tar Heel - As part of an advertising campaign for his new social media site, sophomore Taylor Robinette emailed approximately 17,000 students Tuesday under the pretense of an Alert Carolina message. The email was promoting the social media site he helped found, called Bevii, and said police were investigating a “report of innovation” on Franklin Street. The email also claimed there were “shots fired” against “outdated social media.”
Robinette said Bevii set up an automatic mailing list a few months ago after they saw that the domain name “alertcarolina.com” had not been registered. Stan Waddell, interim chief technology officer for UNC Information Technology Services, said ITS blocked both the website where the email originated and the Bevii site in order to prevent further emails.
“The real danger is that someone would see that email and not get all the context and think something really is happening,” Waddell said.
One of those A+ idea, F- execution type scenarios. Got a new product, need to get the word out, need to start a ground swell of awareness. How are you supposed to get the attention of an entire campus? How do you get in the minds of thousands of college kids focused on classes, midterms, and partying? Especially in a social media landscape already chock full of competition? Need a big splash. Can’t just knock quietly, need to kick the door down and announce to motherfuckers that you’re in the building. Exactly what this Bevii bro was thinking. Unfortunately if you made a list of top 5 worst possible ways you could do it, sending out a schoolwide mass shooting alert from a fake police account would be right there at the bottom. Especially when it results in your new site that you were advertising getting blocked on the campus you’re promoting it too. Oops. Now you know why you know at least 9 chicks who work in PR. Industry needs as many people as they can get to cancel out dudes like Taylor Robinette.
