49ersHotRead – Coach Jim Harbaugh took two points off the scoreboard – and an estimated $75 million away from those who bet on the 49ers to win Thursday night’s game by more than seven points. With 43 seconds remaining in their 13-6 victory, Harbaugh declined a safety from a chop-block penalty, eliminating any a last-gasp Seahawks comeback on a would-be ensuing kickoff. Oddsmakers varied on how much they favored the 49ers, but the spread ranged from them being 7- to 8-point favorites, according to R.J. Bell of Pregame.com. Bell said in this forum post: “Overall, it’s safe to say that coach Harbaugh’s unconventional decision resulted in a $75 million dollar swing worldwide with the bettors overall losing that amount (due to 65% of the action being on the 49ers) and the bookies overall winning that amount.”
This has got to be one of the worst parts about being a professional athlete or coach. You make a good coaching call for the sake of your team and end up with thousands of people who want to kill you. Like if I’m Jim Harbaugh I’m legitimately scared for my life today. I mean I used to get depressed losing $5 bets on BetUs in high school. Imagine the people whose job is gambling? Whose livelihoods literally depend on betting? These decisions cost them their mortgages. And the kicker is anybody insane enough to bet that kind of cash on football games is absolutely insane enough to murder you in cold blood. Just saying if I’m Harbaugh I got my head on a swivel today.
PS- I had Seahawks +7 in my Pick ‘Em league and I am 100% sure that this is the first time in my life that one of these weird gambling things has gone my way. Literally always on the other side of it, always.
