Previously -UC Berkeley Engineering Student Spends Freshman Year Making A Fully Automated Dorm Room
UCB - Derek Low is just your ordinary college freshman who turned his Berkeley dorm room into a futuristic smart home with automatic window shades, voice-activated lights and preset college scenarios such “emergency party button.” His video demo of the room has stirred up a frenzy of online media attention ― and earned him a notice from resident hall officials to appear at a judicial hearing. Low began imagining his “Berkeley Ridiculously Automated Dorm” (BRAD) after stumbling across a similar idea online several years ago. Putting his plan into action required some tolerant roommates, a few weeks of patience and about $200 to $300 worth of off-the-shelf equipment.
Does this story surprise anyone? I mean even Derek Low had to see this coming right? Like we’re not talking about sane rational people here. We’re not talking about people who would celebrate an engineering student’s pretty cool and skilled accomplishment. Skills he picked up at the very college he’s paying to study at. Not people who would say hey this guy was practicing building and creating technology instead of running around campus kicking signs over and breaking shit belligerently drunk. Nope we got a couple violations of the student living handbook bylaws here. Section V Article XI in clear violation with those automated opening windows to let the sunlight in. Investigation time bitches! Let’s nail this fucker! And make sure we have him expelled by sundown, we’ve got house parties to break up and fraternities to eradicate from the face of the earth.
