CNN — Twitter users erupted in anger Saturday after discovering shirts listed on Amazon with a slogan that appeared to promote rape and violence against women. The shirt read “Keep Calm and Rape On” and was available on Amazon’s UK website. The company that prints the shirts, U.S.-based Solid Gold Bomb, removed the listing after it was notified of the slogan. The company also removed a shirt with the slogan “Keep Calm and Hit Her.” Solid Gold Bomb apologized, saying the slogans were computer-generated and the company did not deliberately create them.
There are more than 540,000 Solid Gold Bomb items for sale on Amazon, which indicates they can’t all be waiting in a warehouse for shipment. “The shirts don’t exist,” Ashton writes. “All that exists is a graphics file on a computer ready to be printed onto a shirt if an order comes through. Still, you might say, someone had to make that file, to type those words and click save. Not necessarily.”
Look, I completely believe that a random computer generated the phrase “keep calm and rape on.” I mean that shit rhymes. There are only so many one or two syllable verbs you can stick in “keep calm and carry on” before you hit rape. Innocent mistake. The “keep calm and hit her” thing is a tougher pill to swallow. Doesn’t even rhyme. Sounds like an inner office joke that accidentally wound up on-line. Don’t care. People need to suck it up and get that there’s some dirty, dark humor out there.
Regardless of the company’s intent, Twitter users have once again proven how profoundly fucking stupid they are as a whole. You can’t claim to want better recognition of female abuse and then go after companies that sell “look at how into beating chicks I am” apparel. Because nothing screams rapist like a shirt that says “I’m a rapist!”. This clothing line would basically be a big sexual predator arrow on dudes so everybody could see how creepy they are. If the steroid track marks in his ass or the triple popped collars didn’t give it away, the shirt that tells you his drug dealer also sells roofies just might. That’s basically the dream for chicks right? Like when sexual predators have to tell all their neighbors they moved in. Basically the same thing. Get your head out of your ass Twitter. Let people who are into raping chicks put that shit on their Amazon purchase history.
