Granite Links at Quarry Hills Golf Review
Tuesday morning at 6:30 I called Granite Links at Quarry Hills to make tee times for Saturday. I wanted to get out there early but had little choice in the matter. We settled on 10am for the Quincy and Granite 9’s. This place has 27 holes to play but the members have preferred tee times, so if you want get out there you better plan ahead.
When I golf, I like to get to the course at least an hour before I tee it up. So many things can go wrong with my game that I don’t need to be pulling in the parking lot and looking for the starter at the same time. We rolled in at 8:45 and the place was jammin’.
I had no clue when I called on Tuesday but this day was their 4th Annual Demo Day. Regardless of that, this place was legit. The whole property was laid out right and I hadn’t even seen a hole yet. The pro-shop guys were good guys; no arrogance like you see at other places. The starter was a good guy too. We’re constantly fucking around with people and this guy had a sense of humor about it. Every person we ran into here turned out to be friendly.
When I first contacted the “Pres” about writing a golf review for the Stool, my pitch was that I was going to spend this upcoming golf season trying to find the perfect course in my backyard; the perfect course for the common man. I’m not going to stop now but I think I came pretty damn close on my first time out. I’ve been meaning to play this track for the past 3 years so I jumped on it this year because I’ve heard rumors that it’ll be going private. Don’t know if that’s true but I wanted to play it before it did.
I’m not going to bore you now, or any week for that matter, with a breakdown of my day, hole by hole. That’s not what this spot is about. I’m here to tell you why you should or shouldn’t play a particular course. Granite Links is a top notch golf facility. The price was right this day (we paid $80 for their off season rates), but it goes up to $125 when peak season hits. And I think it’s worth every penny. Included in that, you get 18 awesome holes with views of Boston I’ve never seen before. Also a bucket of balls for the range which is grass the way it should be. The golf carts are pimped out. Nice electric machines equipped with GPS, tees and a cooler already stocked with ice. Break down that GPS and you have cbssportsline.com in the top right hand corner for all your gambling needs.
The fairways here rival any course I’ve ever played. To put that into perspective, I’ve played both Doral down in Miami and Trump National out in Los Angeles. There’s nothing I can describe for you here that you can’t find on their homepage. But I will tell you this; the 18 holes that I played were all different in their own way. The challenges you faced could be either in your tee shot or your approach. The greens were quick but the reads were true. If you can make putts you can score here.
To make your day even more enjoyable, the shed at the top of the property is fully stocked with beer and food. The food isn’t those cold cut sandwiches that have been wrapped up for 2 days in the fridge either. This grub is made to order; egg and cheese for breakfast, a grilled burger and a dog at the turn; beers all day. All the girls that work this place could be a smokeshow of the day. No doubt. Even Dianne from Quincy who was pushing beers out of her golf cart could get there. Her only flaw was telling me she thought Barstoolsports was obsolete when I approached her for a picture.
Since I had to find a negative or 2 because it simply couldn’t be that perfect, I’ve come up with 3 things that if different would have made this place better. First thing being the wind which the course obviously had no control over; not sure if it’s like that all the time, but if it is it certainly does not help the scorecard. Secondly, which would not have been an issue if I hadn’t pushed my drive right, off of the 9th tee, but since I did, it is. This hole abuts the back of the driving range. It is netted off but there are way too many range balls getting through. Couldn’t find my Titleist and it wasn’t from lack of trying. And lastly was the 19th hole. Beautiful clubhouse but the bartenders were all dudes. That’ll drive me away every day and twice on Sundays.
One quick note about the clubhouse though; if you like shrimp, you can get a dozen good sized ones as an appetizer for 11 bucks. That’s the best deal I’ve seen in years.
