Golf Course Review: Cross Winds Golf Club
The rains have finally let up enough to squeeze in a round this past weekend. The decision was up to me this time, so I rolled the dice with Cross Winds Golf Club down in Plymouth. I've played the more popular courses in town but I had never been to this particular place and I don't think I'll go back.
One would figure,.. if you were going to construct a golf course in the same neighborhood as Pinehills and Waverly Oaks, you would try to build off of what has made them successful. And what I'm talking about here is not the course itself, because the 18 we played made for a decent round of golf. What they lack in is customer service; or lack there of. The service wasn't bad. There was just no service at all.
Every step of the way, you had to figure it out on your own. The clubhouse is basically a consession stand at the edge of the parking lot. You walk up to pay your greens fees, which were a reasonable $66 bucks, and then you are on your own. Mind you, they have 27 holes here and the girl who took our money didn't even tell us which 18 we were playing or where we needed to go. After 7 years of business, these guys are still working out the kinks.
The property itself did have some of what I look for in a golf course. The elevation changes were there especially in a couple of the par 3's. The holes were all separated from each other so you couldn't spray your shots from hole to hole. It is a challenging course. But what was really the mental killer for me was the rough. It had to be 6 inches deep and if you rolled off of the fairway you had a 50/50 shot at finding your ball. This game is difficult enough without having to lose golf balls after making decent shots.
There really is not a hell of a lot more to say about this place. I guess I kinda knew what I was in for before I headed down. On Wednesday when I called my buddy Morgs up to see if he wanted in, he declined with a simple, "that place is puss" comment.
Lastly, just a few words of wisdom if you do plan to play a round down there. Bring your own beers because we saw the beverage cart once in a 5 hour round. And if you don't like dealing with rangers on the course, stay away. The fat prick that was working on July 4th thinks he's Tony Soprano and had a comment everytime he rode by.
