Golf Course Review: Breakfast Hill Country Club

Greenland, NH.  It’s not as far away as it sounds.  It took us only 50 minutes to get there from Billerica this Saturday morning.  Our destination; Breakfast Hill Country Club.  Pulling into the lot, the property looked a little commercialized.  The clubhouse is fairly new but it had little character in its exterior design.  And the large metal shed to the left looks like it belongs at an airport and not a “country club”.

Greens fees will cost you $69 bucks on the weekends which is a nice number for a course of this quality.  By quality, I’m talking specifically the condition of the greens, fairways and tee boxes.  Everything was pristine but most New England courses are this time of year.

Hole after hole, I was waiting for this track to give me some temptations.  But it never came.  Don’t get me wrong, I enjoyed the whole round.  We tee’d off at 8:30 and finished around quarter past noon.  The game was smooth sailing from the 1st thru the 18th.  I just couldn’t get over that empty feeling inside; the course just lacks something.

When I play a round, what satisfies me are the rewards of taking a few risks.  Chopping down a few holes that were designed to punish or reward a golfer that takes those risks. Should I bale out to the right with my 7 iron and leave me 150 from the green or should I pull the cover off my 3 wood and try to clear that hazard guarding the green?   You won’t have to ask yourself that here.  Everything is straight forward; vanilla golf.  What they did do was tighten the entire course up to compensate for lack of length; by basically forcing you to keep your driver in your bag.

I told you last week I was a par 3 man.  They are my bread and butter.  And this week it was no different.  They were all on the shorter side with my longest club used being an 8 iron.  My 9 iron was my laser today and my putter was my crutch.  I missed all 4 birdie tries but came out shooting 12 on the 4 par 3’s.

Now for the lighter side of golf…  the beer, the food and the ladies that serve them.  This is where I staggered out of the gate.  I was still a little banged up from the Sox game the night before but Megan was there on “Q” with the liquid to cure the evil.  She’s driving around with a trunk full of 16oz aluminum bottles/cans whatever it is you call them and she stayed by our sides all morning long.

The back side of the clubhouse had a little more character.  At the turn they had the grilled fired up and you could get a burger, a sausage, or a grilled chicken sandwich.  This was kind of a double edged sword, the outdoor work station abutted the inside bar so you had your choice of beers from the cooler or from the hard stuff inside.  Inside or out, the ladies who both were named Tracy gladly served us with a smile.

The guys I played with today, as well as myself, all had a good time.  It’s hard not to when your out playing golf.  Pat who has been my right hand man for all 3 of the course reviews this spring had one of his better days.  Bob rebounded well after missing the last round due to the birth of his daughter.  And Jenks, the newbie had 9 ugly holes and 9 decent ones.  I think he was still messed up from launching his boat on route 3 south earlier in the week.  That was a $400 tow which could cripple anyone’s golf game.

Is this course a must play?  I wouldn’t say “Must”, but I would play it again.  It’s priced right and it’s groomed the way it should be.  If the $70 round is what you are budgeted for, take a ride up 95 and play Breakfast Hill.

Breakfast Hill Country Club is located at 399 Breakfast Hill Road in Greenland, NH.
