From Her Perspective

Mix Tapes

The one thing that I wish had happened to me in middle or high school that didn’t was that a boy would have made me a mix tape.  Given the fact that I was pretty much the scariest girl in my class, it is not surprising that this never happened.  I know it’s retro and more than a little corny, but I often feel like my life would have been changed for the better if this had happened.  Or maybe if I didn’t have glasses, braces, psoriasis, huge bangs, and a limp...  So bust out the iTunes or Limewire or whatever you have.  Here is the ultimate mix tape for your girl.

“The Luckiest” by Ben Folds Five.  It’s sort of the perfect wedding song.  Yeah, I know you’re thinking “gross”, but it’s really pretty and good for slow dancing.  Which, if you are really looking to impress, you will do with her in your living room.  When nobody is around, of course.

“For All Time” by Soluna.  My girlfriends and I have spent many hours discussing how this is the most romantic song ever.  It is pure cheese, and pure amazing.  Just put it on, she’ll freak out over it.

“I’d Die Without You” by PM Dawn.  Whatever happened to them?  I loved the big guy with the high voice, and I completely love this song.

“Into the Mystic” by Van Morrison.  It’s just cool, and it’s something you can listen to and anticipate something really great is going to happen.  This may only apply to girls who listen to this song, but I’m telling you, it is gold.

“One Tree Hill” or “Running to Stand Still” by U2.  I guess it depends on what “feel” you want your mix to have.  Whenever I listen to the opening of “One Tree Hill” I feel almost exhilarated, like when summer turns to fall.  And “Running to Stand Still” is so intense; it’s a great song to have sex to.  Have I said too much?

“On Love in Sadness” by Jason Mraz.  Jason Mraz is one of those guys who girls secretly think is totally attractive in a very weird way.  This is a very cool, sort of romantic song that is fun to sing in the car.  And thinking of you.  Aww…

“Share the Darkness Tonight” by The Saw Doctors.  Chills.  This song makes every girl I play it for turn into a puddle.  Girls love foreign guys, and especially ones with Irish accents.  We all want to be swept off our feet by some hot, romantic guy and while the likelihood of this is extremely small, we can fantasize.  And all the better for you if you’re there when she listens to it.

“Nothing but the Wheel” by Peter Wolf and Mick Jagger.  Every girl needs a song to listen to when she is mad at guys.  At least if she has it on when she hates you for leaving the seat up or doing that dumb thing you always do, you’ll enjoy it, because it’s a really, really good song.  “Blue” by The Jayhawks presents a similar vibe.  I always think of make-up sex when I hear it.  And you’ll like it, too, even though you won’t admit it.

“Just a Friend” by Biz Markie.  This isn’t exactly a romantic song, per se, but it is my favorite song ever and I think any mix worth its salt should include this most excellent tune.

Again, I am aware of how corny this sounds.  But I cannot imagine any girl not secretly loving the fact that you were thinking about her enough to do something like this for her.  Oh, also, I know that there aren’t enough songs in this article to fill an actual CD (or tape, if you are awesome); because I figure you probably have some of your own that you’d want to use.  So yeah, a little bit silly, but sometimes it’s fun to pretend you’re back in middle school.  Okay, I have to get back to making my friendship bracelets now, have a good week.
