College Picks

Well this is the last week of college picks before our annual College Bowl Spectacular.  And it’s safe to say that this season has been a disappointment.  We started off hot last week winning our first two games with Miami and Texas A+M, only to drop our next four totally ruining our Thanksgiving Weekend. It didn’t help that the starting QB of our Mortal Lock (Arizona) was the victim of a late hit in the 1st half which knocked him out of the game.  You just can’t prepare against stuff like that.  Anyway, I hope the First Lady is all set for Christmas this year because things are looking bleak.  But my guess is that I’ll have a huge week to the season much like hitting a perfect drive on the 18th hole after shooting a 109.  It will leave a good taste in my mouth and rope me in for another year of misery next season.   Anyway, onto the picks for a small college board

Season Record 19-25 Last Week 2-4 – Mortal Lock Record 4-5

Fresno State at San Jose State -4.5

This is one of those reputation games.  I feel like if the team names and records were reversed, Fresno would be a 21 pt favorite in this one.   I mean Fresno State is 1-4 on the road this year and SJ State is 5-1 at home with their only loss coming by a field goal to Boise State.   Fresno has won 3 games in a row, but they only covered in one of those games.  And guess what?   That was the only time Fresno State has covered the entire season.  They are a whopping 1-10 against the spread this year.     Meanwhile San Jose State is an impressive 7-3 against the number.  I hate to make San Jose State my mortal lock because the game isn’t on TV, but sometimes you’ve just got to do what you’ve got to do.

Mortal Lock – SJ State

Arkansas vs. Florida -2.5

Last week was really the first time I’ve seen Arkansas play all season long against LSU.    I was very impressed with them although I was under whelmed with their offensive play calling.  In case you haven’t seen Arkansas play before, they run a version of West Virginia’s offense which they call the “Wildcat” formation.  Basically they put their best player (McFadden) in the shotgun and run the ball.  It’s a very difficult offense to stop.  But if you can stop it, then Arkansas is helpless because they can’t throw the ball at all.  I mean not even a little bit.  Regardless, I think they will be too physical for Florida who has been the luckiest team in the country this year.  Plus I hate Urban Meyer and Chris Leak so it’s a fun team for me to root against.

The Pick – Arkansas

Wake Forest vs. Georgia Tech – 2.5

I’m pissed at both these teams from last week.  I bet on GTech against Georgia and they somehow managed to push against the Bulldogs in a game they pretty much dominated.  Then I started tilting and flipped a coin in the Maryland vs. Wake game and bet on Maryland.  To say that Wake Forest ran the ball at will on the Terps would be one of the great understatements of all time.  Maryland could have had 37 guys in the box and Wake still would have run for 7 yards a carry.  And if there is anything more depressing than betting on a team that can’t stop the run than I don’t know what it is.  Anyway, this game is pretty much a toss up in my mind, but with slim pickings this week, I’m going to go with the Yellow Jackets again.  I just feel like if I switch it up and reverse my picks from last week I know Georgia Tech will stick it up my ass.

The Pick – Gtech

Nebraska vs. Oklahoma -4

This is another game I really have no opinion on.   Both teams beat Texas A+M by 1 pt.   And I was on the wrong side in both those games.  Therefore I’m going to declare these teams even and take the pts here.   Although something tells me that betting on Bill Callahan vs. Bob Stoops is a very stupid move.   But that kind of makes senses since I’m a very stupid gambler.

The Pick - Nebraska
