College Picks

Last week was a big bounce-back week for us in college.  We went 3-1-1 and destroyed our Mortal Lock as Georgia Tech humiliated the Hokies in Blacksburg, just like we said they would.  It was only a matter of time until we got this train rolling.  We watch too much college football not to start winning sooner or later.  If you’re not on board with our picks, I’m begging you to jump on this week.  You don’t want to be like the poor fool at a craps table who is watching a hot roller for like an hour because he is afraid that the second he jumps in the guy will crap out immediately.    It’s still early in our roll and you don’t want to be kicking yourself for staying on the sidelines next week.

Season Record 9-9-1 Last Week 3-1-1 Mortal Lock Record 1-3

Pitt at Syracuse +9

The Cuse is in the house, oh my God, oh my God!  Can you believe that the Syracuse Orangemen are 5-0 vs. the spread this year?   5-0!  And can you believe that Syracuse vs. Pitt may be the game of the year for the ACC?   I actually bumped into Mike Tranghese (Big East Commissioner) at Jamie Chisholm’s wedding last week and I whispered to him that it’s been a great year for the Big East and he just smiled and said: “So far, it has.”   Indeed.  Anyway, I love the Orange catching nine points here.  The Dome is a tough place to play and for the first time in years, it will be rocking.  Pitt may win this game, but it will go down to the wire.   The Cuse in the house, oh my God, oh my God.

The Pick - Syracuse

Maryland at Georgia Tech -13.5

I love it.  The bookmakers fell right into my trap on this one.  Gambling is a lot like chess, in that you need to see things like six moves ahead.    Last week, my mortal lock was Georgia Tech +8 against Virginia Tech.  I predicted that the Yellow Jackets would not only cover, but that they’d win straight up.  However, it wasn’t because I thought Georgia Tech was so great, but rather because VTech sucks this year.  And just as I expected, the Yellow Jackets went into Blacksburg and humiliated the Hokies.  Now, Part Two of my master plan is about to take shape.   The bookmakers and general public are putting way too much stock in last week’s upset and have totally overvalued GTech this week.  There is no way they should be spotting two TDs to Maryland.  I’ll take the Terps.  Check.  Mate.

Mortal Lock – Maryland

Penn State at Minnesota +2.5

Last year, I took Minnesota against Penn State and the Nittany Lions won by about 100 points.  I won’t make the same mistake again.  Minnesota is not very good this year.  I took Michigan vs. them last week and the Wolverines should have won by 50.  I just don’t see any way Minnesota wins this game.  Penn State hasn’t lost as a favorite in like two years.  The only way I see them losing this game is if the entire team has to take a dump at the same time and runs off the field, like Papa Joe did two weeks ago.   By the way, I wonder if the administration will use that event against Paterno when they want him to retire and he refuses to leave.  “How can you still coach when you can’t even control your bowels?”

The Pick – Penn State

LSU at Florida +2

The fact that the Gators are catching two points at home in this game should tell you just how much the bookmakers respect LSU.  The Tigers already burned me once this year when they failed to cover against Auburn by ½ point as my mortal lock.  But like all great gamblers, I’m going to get back up on the horse and try it again.  I still think LSU is one of the best teams in the country.  And I’m not sold on the Gators.  Maybe it’s because the Florida fans constantly boo Chris Leak?  I mean, if the home fans are booing the starting QB of an undefeated team there has to be trouble on the horizon, right?  They must know more than I do.

The Pick – LSU

Arizona at UCLA -11

What’s the deal with UCLA?  Did they lose their entire team last year or something?  Weren’t they pretty good last year?  Drew Olson is still the QB, so why can’t they score any points?  The Bruins were beating Stanford 7-0 last week at the half and they scored on a blocked punt.  This should put up red flags to everybody.  Now, I realize that UCLA will be looking for revenge in this game from the whupping that Arizona put on them last year, but they’ll be lucky just to win the game.  These two teams are dead even.  It should be a real low-scoring snoozer that comes down to the final possession.

The Pick – Arizona
